Ebola Cases and Deaths Rapidly Mount - RedHill Updates on Opaganib Emergency Outbreak Development
RedHill is advancing discussions for its investigational drug opaganib as a potential treatment for the Ebola outbreak, which has now reached 3,221 confirmed cases and 1,407 deaths. The company is coordinating with African health agencies and universities to evaluate the oral drug, which has shown preclinical synergy with Gilead's remdesivir.
Data from a Phase 3 COVID-19 study supports opaganib's use, showing a 70.2% reduction in mortality when used as an add-on to standard care and improving viral RNA clearance times by at least four days. RedHill also noted prior selection of opaganib by U.S. BARDA for Ebola development, boosting confidence in its dual mechanism of action against the virus.
Despite the positive data, the company emphasized that opaganib is an investigational drug not yet approved by any regulatory authority and remains dependent on successful partnership discussions.
